About Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment in which patients breathe 100% pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, typically at 1.5 to 3 times normal atmospheric pressure. This dramatically increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood and tissues, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and fighting infection.
HBOT has been used for decades to treat decompression sickness in divers and is now FDA-approved for 14 conditions including diabetic wounds, radiation injury, carbon monoxide poisoning, and certain infections. Many clinics also offer HBOT for off-label uses such as traumatic brain injury, long COVID, and anti-aging.
Conditions Treated with HBOT
- Wound Care — Diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, skin grafts, and other chronic wounds that resist conventional treatment.
- Traumatic Brain Injury / Concussion — Post-concussion syndrome, blast injuries, and other TBI cases where enhanced oxygenation may support neurological recovery.
- Long COVID — Fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, and other persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection.
- Sports Recovery — Accelerated healing from fractures, sprains, muscle tears, and post-surgical rehabilitation for athletes.
- Anti-Aging / Longevity — Cellular repair, cognitive enhancement, and overall wellness optimization through increased oxygen delivery.
- Radiation Injury — Soft tissue and bone damage from cancer radiation therapy, including radiation cystitis, proctitis, and osteoradionecrosis.
- Chronic Pain — Fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), neuropathy, and other chronic pain conditions.
- Infections — Osteomyelitis, necrotizing fasciitis, gas gangrene, and other serious infections where HBOT enhances antibiotic effectiveness.
How HBOT Works
During a typical HBOT session, you enter a pressurized chamber — either a monoplace chamber (single person) or a multiplace chamber (multiple patients). The chamber is pressurized to 1.5-3 ATA (atmospheres absolute), and you breathe pure oxygen for 60-90 minutes.
Under pressure, oxygen dissolves directly into blood plasma at much higher concentrations than normal breathing allows. This oxygen-rich blood reaches damaged tissues, promotes new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), reduces swelling, strengthens the immune system, and accelerates the body's natural healing processes.
Types of HBOT Providers
- Dedicated HBOT Centers — Facilities focused exclusively on hyperbaric medicine, often with multiple chamber types and experienced hyperbaric staff.
- Hospital Wound Care Centers — Hospital-based programs using HBOT as part of comprehensive wound management, typically covered by insurance.
- Integrative/Wellness Clinics — Holistic practices combining HBOT with functional medicine, IV therapy, and other complementary approaches.
- Neurology/TBI Clinics — Specialized facilities using HBOT for brain injury recovery, stroke rehabilitation, and neurological conditions.
- Sports Recovery Centers — Performance-focused facilities using HBOT for athletic injury recovery and enhanced training.
- Med Spas & Anti-Aging Clinics — Aesthetic and longevity-focused practices offering HBOT alongside other wellness treatments.
How to Choose an HBOT Clinic
- Check credentials — Look for clinics with UHMS (Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society) accreditation and board-certified hyperbaric physicians.
- Ask about chamber type — Monoplace chambers treat one person; multiplace chambers allow a technician inside. Both are effective, but multiplace chambers may be preferred for certain conditions.
- Verify treatment protocols — Ask about pressure levels (ATA), session duration, and total number of sessions recommended for your condition.
- Understand costs — Insurance typically covers FDA-approved indications (wound care, radiation injury). Off-label treatments are usually out-of-pocket. Get clear pricing upfront.
- Ask about safety — Clinics should conduct medical screening, monitor patients during treatment, and have emergency protocols in place.
- Consider location and schedule — HBOT often requires 20-40 sessions. Choose a clinic with convenient location and hours.
